#Agasthyarkoodam – Ten Friends, One Mountain, A Journey to Remember
Some journeys are measured in kilometers. Others are measured in memories.
Our Agasthyarkoodam adventure began long before we stepped onto the trail. We were ten people from different places brought together by a shared love for travel and the mountains. From Bangalore, it was me, Hari, and Kiran. Joining us were Bindu, Kavith, Lijo, Jassin, and Vishnu from the Thiruvalla region, along with Sandeep from Kollam.
What started as a trekking plan among acquaintances soon became one of the most memorable journeys of our lives.
The journey began with overnight travel, countless cups of tea, laughter, and conversations that made the long distance feel shorter. As we reached Bonacaud, the gateway to Agasthyarkoodam, excitement was at its peak. Standing at the edge of the forest, surrounded by mist-covered hills, we knew we were about to enter a completely different world.
The first few kilometers were gentle. The trail wound through dense evergreen forests where sunlight struggled to reach the ground. Giant trees stood like silent guardians, and streams crossed our path at regular intervals. The air felt fresh, carrying the scent of wet soil and forest leaves.
As we walked deeper into the Agasthyamala forest, the biodiversity around us became impossible to ignore. Rare medicinal plants, wild orchids clinging to tree trunks, colorful butterflies, and unfamiliar birds reminded us why this region is considered one of the richest ecological treasures of the Western Ghats.
The trail, however, was not always kind.
There were steep ascents that tested our stamina and rocky stretches that demanded careful footing. At several points, we had to climb over large boulders and uneven rock surfaces, using both hands and legs to pull ourselves upward. Every climb felt challenging, but every time we turned around, the view rewarded us with endless layers of green mountains fading into the horizon.
Somewhere along the trail, our conversations became shorter and our breathing heavier. Yet nobody wanted to stop for long. Every bend promised a new landscape, a hidden stream, or another breathtaking viewpoint.
As fatigue started setting in, something beautiful happened. We stopped being ten individual trekkers. We became a team.
Someone shared water.
Someone offered snacks.
Someone waited for the slower walkers.
Someone cracked a joke when everyone looked exhausted.
Kiran's humor kept spirits high. Hari's energy was infectious. Jassin and Lijo always had something funny to say. The laughter echoed through the forest, making even the difficult stretches feel lighter.
By evening, we reached Athirumala Base Camp.
The sight of the camp after a long day of trekking felt like an achievement in itself. Tired legs finally found rest. Sitting together under the evening sky, sharing simple food and replaying the day's adventures, we realized how little happiness actually requires.
That night was magical.
Far away from city lights, the sky revealed thousands of stars. The silence of the forest was occasionally interrupted by distant sounds from the wilderness. Sitting there with friends, surrounded by mountains and darkness, felt strangely peaceful.
Before sunrise the next morning, we began the final ascent to the summit.
This was the section everyone had been talking about.
The trail became steeper, narrower, and rockier. Large exposed rock faces required careful climbing. Strong winds greeted us as we gained altitude. Every step demanded effort. Our legs were tired from the previous day, yet the excitement of reaching the summit kept us moving forward.
Then the forest slowly opened up.
The trees became shorter, the sky wider, and suddenly the summit appeared.
Standing atop Agasthyarkoodam, nearly 1,900 meters above sea level, was an emotional moment. Clouds floated beneath us. Endless mountain ranges stretched towards the horizon. For a few minutes, nobody spoke much.
There was nothing left to say.
The mountain had already spoken.
Near the summit stood the sacred idol associated with Sage Agastya. Whether one views it spiritually or simply as a historical symbol, the place carried a unique sense of calm and reverence.
As we stood there together, posing for photos and soaking in the view, I realized that the summit was only part of the achievement. The real victory was the journey itself—the effort, the friendship, the shared struggles, and the memories created along the way.
The descent tested us once again. Knees began to ache, muscles protested, and exhaustion slowly returned. Yet the mood remained cheerful. Stories, jokes, and endless teasing accompanied us all the way back.
Even after returning home, the journey refused to end.
The WhatsApp group came alive with photos, videos, inside jokes, and health updates about sore knees and aching muscles. The famous "bear fight" jokes continued. Pictures from the summit kept appearing. Everyone relived the trek through shared memories.
Looking back today, what I remember most is not the distance we covered or the elevation we climbed.
I remember ten people from different places coming together as strangers and returning as friends.
I remember the dense forests, medicinal plants, mountain streams, and rocky climbs.
I remember the laughter at Athirumala camp.
I remember the silence at the summit.
And I remember a mountain that reminded us that the best journeys are never just about reaching the top—they are about the people who walk beside us along the way.
Agasthyarkoodam gave us stunning views, unforgettable adventures, and countless photographs.
But its greatest gift was friendship.
And that is a memory that will stay with us far longer than the trek itself.
